Few people wake up and think, “Today, I’m going to file a lawsuit.” Filing a lawsuit is usually seen as a “last resort” to put to rest some quarrel that has persisted for some time. This toolkit aims to provide a general overview of civil litigation accessible to a layperson so that, if the “last resort” situation materializes, the reader feels more prepared for what lies ahead. And even if the need for litigation never arises, a general understanding of civil litigation increases appreciation for the legal system, which is an important foundation of civic education.
